GREAT SOUTHERN HOTEL, ROSSLARE HARBOUR, JULY 2011
Jul 14th, 2011 by Conor McCabe
Went out for a drive yesterday morning with Donal and his son Padraig. We went as far as Rosslare Harbour and drove up to the old Great Southern Hotel.
It’s fully deserted, broken windows and what have you.
This is the outside, from a wider angle:
This is what the foyer looks like:
And here’s a bath in the carpark.
As Donal pointed out as we drove around, this is a boarded-up hotel less than 500 meters from an international ferry terminal.

Yup! That is the future!
I recall Dear ol Dirty Dublin in the 60’s. Derelict buildings. Half of Henrietta St was empty. It decayed further during the following decades until affordability meant some took on the job of renovation.
Hotels? Ireland built too many and we are entering a depression that willlast decades. That much was obvious after 1999. The 9/11 event meant it was postponed and aggravated by years of lunacy with liar loans. As incomes decrease, house values will drop faster and some will be abandoned.
Land is not sufficiently taxed in Ireland, as it is worshipped, ask Bull McCabe!
No increased taxes? Right! 77% was the highest income tax rate in the 1970’s In the UK, it was 98% for unearned income! Only 83% for earned income….
Reckon on everyone having more time and only one income per family if they are lucky!
I told the PAC that the Revenue Commissioners forbade Inspectors of Taxes from entering banks. They accepted lies from the mighty and got closer to the banks after the DIRT enquiry. SSIA anyone? You now pay with all this destruction. Enjoy, you dishonest bastards, who re-elect frauds to be TDs!
Have fun now!
How many ghost hotels are scattered around Ireland? Are some of them haunted at night by clinking glasses and screeching cash registers?
Hi Conor,
I was over home last week and went to have a look at the hotel for myself. Really felt like putting a brick through a window as I was so disguisted and felt let down by the counrty that a hotel of such stature has ended up in rack and ruin. Did you have a look at the swimming pool? Nothing but empty beer cans and a holy bible !! All hope / faith is lost. I was brought up in Rosslare and go home 4 or 5 times a year with my family. What kind of a place is it to be bringing people to now. That hotel used to be so posh and has great memories for me. I had a look inside too, thers a few tramps moved into it. I overheard kid on a train to Dublin taking about it and planning a party in it. Something is going to go terribly wrong in there….something bad. Why wasn’t the place boarded up? Surely the last owners have some duty of care to the village. I seems they just tossed the keys over their shoulder as they bolted for the door. An abosolute disgrace and indicitive of the direction Ireland is heading. Shame on them all.
:-(
what about last weekend is somebody going to open their eyes over this situation
Took a look around here last week. Almost all electrical cable and copper piping has been stripped out of the place. How does this happen with people nearby? Do the Gardaí not give a shit?
