IRISH CENTRAL BANK TO ISSUE COMMEMORATIVE QUEEN EURO
May 16th, 2011 by Conor McCabe
The Central Bank of Ireland has gained permission to issue a one euro coin with the Queen’s head on it as part of the celebrations surrounding the official visit which begins tomorrow.
The European Central Bank gave the go-ahead last week, adding that such a move would have a positive effect on Ireland’s bond market ratings.
‘We may be able to convince investors that Ireland’s not actually part of the Euro anymore’ said the bank’s president, Jean-Claude Trichet, ‘and sure that can only be a good thing, no?’
The Irish economist, David McWilliams, has already claimed credit for the gesture, although it is rumoured that he has a press release on file stating that while he wanted the Queen’s head on Irish coins, any possible future counter-productive effects generated by such a move are entirely due to a misinterpretation of his advice on the part of the Central Bank.
The Taoiseach, Phil Hogan, has also welcomed the move, stating that it is a reflection of the maturity of the Irish people.

Brilliant Stuff Conor.
Cheers IEL!
Conor,
And we are urged to change the national anthem.
So I suggest
” Oh, Irishman forget the past
And think of a time that ’s coming fast
When we shall all be civilised
Neat and clean and well advised
Oh,wont Mother England be suprised
Whack fol de diddle etc
Hmm… we — a republic that struggled to be free of a monarchy — already have legal tender coins bearing the images of two queens, one king, a royal prince, a grand duke, and a sacredotal monarch.
You DO realize this is satire, no? A commentary on the visit of the Queen of England to Ireland and the fawning media and political reaction to same?
I suppose you’d kick the wheels of a clown’s car and say, ‘oh that’ll never make it onto the M50.’
Ay - ‘Neither Queen, nor Bankers but Irony’
Damn glad I’m not back there at the moment - as hearing about it all on French radio is meking me want to retch…
Yes, we cannot be restricted or limited by our past history, I welcome the new one euro coin with the Queens head, I was proud of the welcome we gave her on her state visit last year.
When we in difficulty last year let us not forget that Britain gave us a dig out.
before the Euro collapse or before we are dumped out, we should now be laying the ground work to realign with sterling our closest neighbour and bigest trading partner.
