Thanks WBS. Yeah it's just in the final chapter dealing with Roddy Doyle but it's a minor quibble.

It's always a good sign when you're reading a work such as this and you're thinking 'Damn! I wish I had said that.'

My thoughts when reading the book alternated between strong admiration and insane jealousy :-)

This is a great review. Thanks a million for that Conor.

Unless I'm misreading you I think you're pointing towards a broader tendency to shift towards literary criticism rather than societal exploration in certain areas of research. It's a real plague as is an overly jargonistic approach. But good to see that this book manages to transcend that even if it gets its feet wet while doing so.

I got the quote from Helena Sheenan's publication, Tracking the Tiger: The Continuing Story of Irish Television Drama, but I don't have a copy of it at home.

However, I think she got the quote from this:

Hugh O'Donnell, Good Times, Bad Times: Soap Operas and Society in Western Europe (London: Leicester University Press, 1999)

but I'll double-check that next time I'm in the national library.

Could you give the source of the Hugh O'Donnell quotation? I would be interested in reading his article in full.

Thanks in advance and for the review,
Robert
