John
"Murphy flew the tricolour and a skull and crossbones flag" I am not sure where your father heard that story but there could be an element of confusion there. I am in contact with the Murphy family who have an extensive collection of photos and newspaper article on their father. They cannot find any mention of skull and crossbones flags, and they also say that this would not be in character. Skull and crossbones implies piracy which is against what Murphy stood for. However Murphy did organise fake coffins to be carried at the head of marches. This was done to make ironic point to the politicians in power about the future options for the marching men and their families. Maybe your dad was thinking of this and got mixed up? Regards, Matt

Liked the video reminisces, we have an article up by Cathal Brennan on the same subject.

Incidentally, my dad tells me he remembers going to Murphy's election rally aged 10 and that Murphy flew the tricolour and a skull and crossbones flag! Not sure what that was meant to mean.

Anyway, article here,
