ZIDANE AT DALYER - WITH HAIR
Mar 25th, 2010 by Sean Baite
This may be more the territory of our observant friends at dangerhere.com as, I warn you in advance, it contains a raw unedited Hamiltonism. It’s a video posted on YouTube by BohsTV which is also available on the Bohs official site, where I spotted it first. It documents the first, and possibly only, visit of Zinedine Zidane to Dublin in the autumn of 1993 for the first leg of a UEFA Cup 1st Round tie. Zidane graced the Dalyer turf, complete with a full head of hair, in a torrential downpour that lasted, as I remember, the whole 90 minutes.
The Bordeaux team did the ‘bare minumum’ pinching a fairly soft away goal in the opening quarter and then appearing to sit back on it. Unfortunately, they took another approach in the return leg at the Stade Lescure and hockeyed Bohs 5 nothing. Looking at the Bordeaux line-up, holding them to 1-0 in Dublin can even be seen as an achievement - 2 starters from the World Cup final feature along with Dugarry, goalscorer in Dalyer and put on as a sub in Stade de France that night in ‘98. I believe they got all the way to the UEFA Cup final following the confidence booster of coming away from Dalyer with a win.
Anyhow, put on your waterproofs and enjoy :
Hamilton must’ve been up in the commentary position in his pirate costume - hence the priceless line: ‘NOT QUITE… SHIVERED THE TIMBERS….’ when Tony Cousins nearly scores an equaliser for Bohs only to hit the crossbar. Also to be noted - current Bohs boss Pat Fenlon in a postmatch interview with a haircut he must’ve gotten in the dodgy barber shop featured in The Courier

this is great Seán. Cheers.
