The Pixies do Doolittle in the Olympia, Dublin
Oct 2nd, 2009 by Donagh
It was as I suspected, there was me planning to write a detailed review of the Pixies gig in the Olympia last Wednesday night, and to go on about how it was the best the gig evar, which it was, and I knew that someone would have either video or audio of it which would be much better at getting across how enjoyable a gig it was.
As it happens I missed the very beginning of the gig. I came in for ‘and God is seven’ having missed out 5 and 6 in the first song This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven.
This is from last nights gig, in which Frank Black talked a lot more to the audience then the night before. On the Wednesday night the band seemed to have first night nerves, with only Kim Deal grinning permanently at the audience. And I mean, permanently.
Mr. Grieves
hope everything is alright hope everything is alright
what’s that floating in the water
oh neptune’s only daughter
i believe
in mr. grieves
pray for a man in the middle
one that talks like doolittle
i believe
in mr. grieves
do you have another opinion
do you have another opinion

Videos courtesy of Handjob films (again) and I came across it from Thrill Pier. Handjob have more clips from the gig on their YouTube page. Thanks.
The gig on Wednesday lasted for an hour and 10 minutes. Everyone sang along to every song recognizing each one from the first chords. Debaser, for some reason, was the track I was looking forward to hearing the most. Not sure why. The encore was only two songs long. They played Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf Version) which was originally a b-side, having already played the album version earlier, and the brilliant, feedback sustained ‘Into the White’, also originally a b-side, although always one of my favourites.
If, like Seán Báite your internet connection is so shite that you can’t view the video there is a cheap seats equivalent. I recorded some of the gig which I’m adding in below. Warning though, the quality isn’t great, but if you were there it might be good enough for you to relive the vibe, man. If not, you can listen and curse the universe.

Thought Mr. Grieves was the best song of the lot on the Thurs… Was pleasantly surprised at just how good the show was. Thought that they’d be a bit rusty. Instead, it was like they’ve been playing that set list for months.
