I assume that great benefactor to humanity, the US armed forces, has a few hundred thousand employees paid on the black to keep discreetly down the league table and keep them Ay-rabs guessing.

Well, like good free market types they keep the numbers down by outsourcing.

Twitter is to me what VHS was to my father Ye made me laugh with that one Conor :-° I suppose, as GL points out in his bit - the problem isn't the medium itself but the idiots using it - like so much other web social networking fads. Same point JSP is making (she's spot-on too).
But fuck - the idiocy of Twitter users is nothing as to those Neo-Con doctrinaires let broadcast 24h a day on one of the US's biggest channels. Can't believe that stuff - mindbogglingly loathsome.
How surprising they don't manage to get a right-wing French or Scandinavian guy over to badmouth their systems (they never will - but probably out of their own xenophobia). What that Tory twat is pissing all over is not 'socialised medicine' but 'underfunded, over-bureaucratised socialised medicine' caused in great part by the policies implemented by his own party last time they were in power.
As to the 3rd biggest employer on earth ?? 1.4 M employees ? Where the fuck do they get twaddle like that from ?

You'll like this bit from Janet Street Porter this morning then:

Twitter works for the middle class, the middle-aged and for work-weary wannabe trendies because it lets them feel they're part of a big happening club, when in fact all they are doing is exchanging mindlessness. If I want to know whether a show is worth going to at the Edinburgh Festival, or if Bonnie Prince Billy's latest album is worth buying, I certainly don't want a 140-character Twitter; I want an intelligent review written in real sentences, not some bastard lingo that's the ugly love-child of texting and abbreviations.

Not to defend it or anything, but twitter can compliments 'intelligent reviews' etc as it links people to them. What is more worrying is that I will now for ever associate Bonnie Prince Billy with Janet Street Porter!

Genuinely, I haven't got a f**king clue as to how it works, or what it does, or what it's about or anything. And any time I've tried to engage with it, I've ended up with a headache.
