Holy crap Batman. Lads, I read alot of blogs. To be honest, when I came across this one it was a nice change to have some clever pictures to go with the text. A history of the use of such cartoons is probably overkill!

gar, try out producing and quit whining, the world is full of critics

detournement'ers keep up the good work

the text is excellent, concise and factual
the combined imagery is artistic genius.

Thanks, Jim. You made me look great in that Batman outfit. Je suis bien détourné. Am I wearing black jocks over the tights? At least they're sexier than Biffo's blue y-fronts in that National Gallery painting two months ago. :)

Cheers for letting me know that detournement is a "French word". But, are you sure this all dates from the French? There's no examples of this, for example, in English civil war pamphleteering? It all comes from the French? In the 1960s? And do the cartoons above even qualify as situationist? Is there really that much of a dichotomy above between form and content? does the above even qualify as a dialectic?

Good, but not original. This is an example of detournement (french word) or the act of wiping the text from comic bubbles and captions and inserting alternative text by way of economic and social commentary in order to provoke radical thought in the readers. The Situationist International guru, Guy Debord, was the chief theoretician in the 1960s and 70s. Here is a link to a sample of how detournement was used to 'subvert' a Lulu comic: http://www.bopsecrets.org/comics/lulu1.htm

Irish graphic designers and cartoonists in the current climate of financial meltdown and political disillusionment have opportunities to use their artistic creativity.
