CAN’T LIVE ? KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN YOUR HIGHNESS….
Nov 3rd, 2008 by Sean Baite
What better, after passing through the weekend of the dead, than a nice couple of covers of cheesy classics ? I came across the below on the excellent French music blog Blogotheque It’s our old deposed sovereign, Bonnie Prince Billy helping out a young Norwegian singer Susanna Karolina Wallumrød. According to Blogotheque, Susanna has brought out albums of covers for the most part. For my own part, the two songs selected here brought me back memories of finishing off other people’s drinks during the slow sets in shite late 80s/early 90s Dublin nightclubs. I’m sure a lot of the rest of you will have similar Proustian associations of ideas when you hear them.
Here’s the link to the post containing the 2 tracks : Can’t Live if…
Or these two should link directly to the tracks :
Susanna/BPB - Without You
Susanna/BPB - Lay all your Love
This collaboration falls into two pronounced tendencies of the Bonnie Prince - 1/ collaborating with attractive younger women (I can understand that one) 2/ covering material of a certain cheesiness and then claiming he doesn’t consider it cheesy at all (still getting to grips with this reasoning, I’m afraid).
The Blogotheque site is well worth a look for many reasons. It has a fine turnover of good quality MP3s and then there’s the excellent ‘Takeaway Concerts’ section. I know Dublin is somewhat of a leader in the world of ‘Takeaway’ with batterburgers and curry sauce and chips - but these Frenchies have nearly overtaken us : Takeaway Concerts / English .
By way of a taster, here’s what they have on offer from Beirut (2 tracks - scroll down post to find the vids) :
