For a nice take-down of the maverick myth, read the cover story from the new Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain

It's long, but it's an interesting read. Depressing, though, that these are the people (Bush, McCain, etc) who will always feel entitled to run the place.

Obama's doing the right thing by hitting hard against McCain's health care plan. Palin lied about it outright in the debate- but what mccain proposes to do is give a 5k tax credit for health care, but then TAX HEALTH BENEFITS. Nice, right?

I see that Palin's making out that Obama's a terrorist lover.
Loved the obama team's response, though, the 30-sec ad attacking "Maverick" John's erratic behaviour, and sticking their attacks to the Republicans and the economy.

My sense is, actually, that they're not going for independents at this point or even trying very hard to win "swing states" that were borderline Dem last time-- they're doubling down and trying to bring out their rabid base. Which is what the Palin pick was about in the first place- motivating the Evangelical Right, who were not so enthused about McCain (they've always had doubts about him) but LOVE LOVE LOVE OH MY GOD LOVE her. It was never a serious play for any Hillary voters who'd ever have voted for Obama in the first place.
It's gonna be ugly (ugliER, I should say) from here on out- they're desperate. But the big news from Thurs (bigger than Palin successfully stringing a couple of sentences together) was McCain pulling out of Michigan, which they'd thought was their best chance for picking up a Dem state- now they're just trying desperately to hold onto states that voted for Bush last time, but Obama's pulling ahead in many of those (Virginia, Ohio, even North Carolina and Florida). So it'll be interesting, and nasty.

Hi Becky, hijack away! Actually, I'd love if you'd write something about the election for the blog. It would be great to have a voice from the States itself, instead of just from us on the outside looking in.
This really came home to me last night when I was watching the debate. It came across here as well that Palin did ok (even when you factor in the low expectations), but she only talked to her base. I didn't get a sense that a swing voter would feel comfortable with the idea of Palin as President.
But last night when I was watching it I was thinking , I am out of the loop here, in that, the answers that Biden gave, and the responses (they were not answers!) that Palin gave, I've no real sense of how they would resonate with the American public, because, well, I'm not a member of the American public.

By the way, I thought Biden was wonderful as well. A passionate, intelligent, social democrat. Great stuff.

Hi again. Did you see any of the debate? She was well prepped with her talking points (robotically so!) and spoke, for the most part, in complete sentences, but it was enormously frustrating to listen to (just so darn folksy! and she kept not answering questions! and lying! etc.). Biden was actually quite good, I thought. Also, he can pronounce "nuclear."
Here's a little jewel from Fox News, giving her a chance to explain why she did so poorly in the earlier interviews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBg0bFAOmOE&eurl=http://talkingpointsmemo.com/
See, it wasn't that she didn't know what she was talking about-- it was that she was "annoyed" that Katie Couric (that paragon of the east-coast-media-elite) wasn't giving her a chance to talk about what REALLY matters to Americans!! I guess for that, you need a fawning, deferential "interviewer" on Fox who'll giggle politely and congratulate you for winning the debate. Sigh. Journalism?
(This is why they're all so stunned when they get an actual follow-up question- no matter how gentle- from anyone, even someone as relatively fluffy as Charlie Gibson or Katie Couric.) Sorry to hijack your blog, just wanted to give you that link...
