I think it refers to the notion of de facto, as opposed to de jure, which is the practice of capitalism using the law of the jungle. So yea, giraffes maybe, but more likely panthers, pythons and all manner of fat arsed babboons.
Should I insert that famous paisleyite heckle here: Whatabout the Vatican millions? Or: Whatabout the medieval papal revocation of the condemnation of usury? Clever Jesuits can handle the contradictory scriptural quotations concerning Dives and Lazarus; the camel, the eye of the needle and the rich man; and the parable of the landowner, his steward and the talents - or the bit in Luke’s Acts where the apostles and followers share everything in common. There are many contradictions in society, as Chairman Mao said. This is equally true of the Church of Rome as well as the Church of Canterbury. Muslim banks get neatly around the quranic disdain for usury by offering no interest on deposits but holding monthly raffles of depositors account numbers for cash prizes.
Being a former DG of the BBC, Mr. Green - I’m surprised that you don’t get the Star Trek reference. ‘As opposed to Capitalism as non carbon-based lifeforms know it, captain…’
Whether it be unethical or immoral, and it may be one or both, it is not nescessarily wrong. As the old song never said, ‘Capitalism makes the world go around.’ I have listened open-mouthed this week as people have spoken of the death of capitalism. Serious commentators have claimed that banking systems will be nationalised and this will lead to the death of capitalism. Get real. Capitalism, unlike its rather odd and embarrasing cousin, socialism, relies on real values, realistic expectations of humanity and, like the Darwinist side of the God vs No God debate, real facts, not invented absolute truths and high blown ideas of how people should behave if only we could educate them. People are greedy. People; men, women and children, are possesed of an undeniable avarice such as to make anything but free market capitalism wholly unworkable, except that the alternative, be it socialism or Marxism or some kind of immoral / unethical dictatorship be yoked to the complete denial of self determination. Democracy, in tandem with free market capitalism, is the worst form of government we know… apart from all of the others.
Capitalism ‘as we know it’? As opposed to what, capitalism as giraffes know it?
War is probably stupid also

Don’t they mean “unethical” rather than “immoral”?

And that’s wisdom, so it is.
