THE INDO AND LISBON: RESEARCH IS FOR WIMPS
Sep 11th, 2008 by Conor McCabe
As well as feeling il-linformed, voters said they feared a host of other issues, including possible conscription into a European army…. (”Coalition Admits It Bungled Lisbon Campaign”, Irish Independent, 11 September 2008)
The research findings tell us nothing new… again, we did not need a team of researchers to tell us this… Government representatives failed miserably to rise to the challenge and get their message across to people who were hungry for information…. (Editorial, Irish Independent, 11 September 2008)
ALMOST three-quarters of people who voted ‘No’ in the Lisbon Treaty referendum mistakenly believed the pact could be easily renegotiated…. The huge influx of immigrants into the country was a factor in the ‘No’ vote… Young people voted ‘No’ by a margin of two to one… (”Revealed: Why We Voted No To Lisbon”, Irish Independent, 17 June 2008)
You don’t need researched articles to sell newspapers, and you don’t need research to blame mistaken paddies and bloody immigrants.
Still. For what possible reason would the property website-owning, Irish billionaire-controlled, Irish Independent have in shifting blame onto easy targets? A newspaper that has made millions on the back of the mortgage boom, with direct links to the rich and powerful on this island? Immigrants are the problem, even when they are not.
