BERTIE ANSWERS HIS CRITICS
Mar 21st, 2008 by Conor McCabe
An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern responded to his critics in devastating fashion today, by issuing an Easter Road safety message.
In Yesterday’s Tribunal proceedings the former secretary of the Taoiseach, Grainne Carruth, admitted under cross-examination that between 1993 and 1995 she deposited £15,500 of sterling into Bertie’s building society account. The Taoiseach had previously told the tribunal that all cheques lodged into this account had been pay cheques from the paymaster general. The building society itself had earlier informed Tim Collins that its records did not go back to 1994. It seems that they were wrong. The records exist, and Bertie had not planned for that scenario. The TSB account became his whtewash account. His failsafe excuse just failed. Because of that, his explanations lie in ruins.
The Irish Independent reports that the ‘Drumcondra Mafia’ - Bertie’s backroom boys - simply do not know how to explain this one to the public, in a way that the public will buy. Similiarly, Bertie’s lawyers have asked for time to ‘consider’ the new evidence.
Drive carefully now.
