JOE DOLAN, 1943-2007
Dec 26th, 2007 by Conor McCabe
It´s not often that you hear news that is genuinely a shock, but tonight´s breaking news from the Irish Times is one of those moments. It is impossible to talk about Irish cultural history without bringing in the showbands, and Joe Dolan was the most successful, and easily the most loved, of all of them.
There´s a comment over on YouTube that Joe Dolan only really made sense in Ireland and on the cabaret circuit - that, seen out of that context, in a video on YouTube for example, he comes across as a bit of a pub singer. That´s probably true, but as the commentator says, to see him only that way is to miss the point. The fact that Joe Dolan made sense in Ireland reflects how much a part of Irish culture he really was.
Joe Dolan. R.I.P.

Ah, the showband era - is this the milestone of its passing ?? Reminds me of that post you put up from ‘80/’81 of home movies from the FAI Senior Cup final - it was another age.
On the same territory - Valérie was watching a clip of ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ on YouTube recently.. in it, I think there was a combination of :
Provos, Transvestitism, grown men dressed as Cowboys and Indians, ancient Fords, battered caravans, an Irish mother….
She thought it was far-fetched - I had to tell her it was docu-drama….
Have fun Joe in the ballroom in the sky…
[…] Even Dublin Opinion marked the first passing away of a Joe Dolan, the better known one Conor on ‘Mullingar’ Joe Dolan . I, however, am referring to the Joe Dolan from Galway who was one of the founding members of […]
