Yes, he told me when I tried to find out if his stuff with Operating Theater was still available. As it happens I work with someone called Richard Doyle, so that's how the Richard bit slipped in. Thanks for the link. I think I'll go back and listen to it again.

Well blogged. A great programme. It's Roger Doyle, by the way, not Richard. And there are podcasts of the whole series here: http://www.rte.ie/lyricfm/sundaysequence/1181542.html

A particularly evil big company, you mean. The holding message could be "We value your call, please go insane while waiting for an operator". Still it's better than the innane jingles that are usually used for hold music.

The musical score looks kind of crazy. I know nothing about musical notation but to my untutored eyes it looks like an attempt to attribute notes to some violent sound distortion.

I wonder how customers would react if poeme electronique became a telephone waiting tune for a big company?
The notation for Helikopter could be framed and hung up in an art gallery.

I know I certainly don't know the answer. But I fired off an email to RTE to get someone there to ask Richard. You never know.

Brilliant stuff Donagh. Thanks for the links....
Operating Theater, Doyle's old group, had an instrumental track of enormous power released sometime around 1981. I can still remember the atmosphere it evoked, something like a cross between The Black Dog, Colourbox and a soundtrack to a horror movie. I've often wondered what it was... anyone know?
