GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER REPARTITIONS IRELAND
Nov 15th, 2007 by Conor McCabe

Today’s Guardian contains a piece by Stuart Jeffries. In it he ponders the outcome of a successful push for Scottish independence. He writes that, post-independence, the most northerly point in Britain will no longer be in Scotland, of course, but, amazingly, in the Republic! Post-independence, the most northerly point of Britain will be Inishrahull island off Donegal. I quote:
British charity walkers will converge on the new most northerly point of Britain, which is Inishtrahull Island, County Donegal. To be honest, though, that sounds like a terrible fuss, what with most of them having to catch boats and ferries.
Now, a quick look at Google Earth proves conclusively that Inishtrahull is part of the Republic. Coupled with my google search, it shows, beyond all burden of proof, that Inishtrahull belongs to the Gael, and is part of the Gael’s mighty free and prosperous nation. Look upon my google search, ye Guardian, and despair!
However, the Gael needs to be on his toes regarding Inishtrahull. The mighty Greenlanders may be able also to stake a claim.
Geologists now believe that millions of years ago a small piece of Greenland broke off from its motherland, and thanks to plate tectonics, floated away from its parent, anchoring first at Islay and finally off Malin Head. Over the past century botanists have scoured Inishtrahull thoroughly and recorded over 100 plant species there, including some plants usually found in Scotland, such as Scots lovage.
Time to sharpen our shilelaghs, meboys. We cannot stand idly by while our sovereignty is subjected to such outlandish attacks by the British media. And Guardian newspaper beware, the Dublin Opinion Eagle is keeping its eye on you.

Interesting. First time I hear of a link between Islay and Greenland. So far the only one I was aware of was a link to Peru, i.e. South America.
thanks for the comment, Armin. I got the information about the geology of Inishtruhull from a site that seems, today, to be offline. I checked the google cache and came up with this (link below). I just thought you might find it interesting. Lovely site on Islay, by the way!

Can I just add that this post is now the proud owner of Googlewhack status.

Look on my googlewhack, ye mighty, and despair!
update: 15:52. Googlewack status destroyed by technorati.
The mighty have looked. Oh despair!
Wikipedia has a very similar comment, I’ll have to read up on this from an Islay point of view and then see how I can write it up.
As well as figure out how to make the link from Inishtrahull to Islay.
