Another Bloody Tony Wilson Tribute to Dance to…
Aug 17th, 2007 by Donagh
Although the untimely passing of Tony Wilson was noted here on Dublin Opinion there was no detailed tribute. All you have to say is Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays and you’ve got the bones of it. But via the Guardian’s click to download site I discovered that the New Yawk MP3 blog soundbites has done a proper job of it.
They only go and provide a whole load of MP3s of some of Factory’s more obscure signings. But don’t get too excited, they’re not all good.
Some will be well known, such as Vinnie Reilly’s the Durutti Column, the Railway Children and the last band the label signed Camper Van Beethoven. I think WorldbyStorm mentioned Section 25 in his discussion about the influence of Joy Division – they’re there too. By the way, I came across an interview with Tony where he was asked which was the worst record Factory ever put out and he said: “I always used to say that I was never terribly fond of Crispy Ambulance”.
But there are others I’ve never heard of, probably for the simple reason that they’re not very good. Still, have a listen.
The Railway Children: Play Now | Play in Popup
Durutti Column – Sketch for Summer : Play Now | Play in Popup
Miaow - When it All Comes Down: Play Now | Play in Popup
Camper Van Beethoven – The Adventure Babies: Play Now | Play in Popup
The Wombats - Lets Dance to Joy Division : Play Now | Play in PopupSpeaking of Factory and Joy Division they also have a track from the Brit act The Wombats with a catchy enough song called Let’s Dance to Joy Division.
And speaking of dancing, here’s a disco injected track from someone I’ve never heard of until checking out Soundbites… Calvin Harris, with “Merry Making at My Place”.
I suspect he’s been listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem.
Great photo, Peter Saville, Wilson and Erasmus on the right. I never knew CVB signed to Factory. The Wombats are too happy… for Factory … Love Durutti Column.
[…] Donagh over on Dublin Opinion has even more on this… […]
Calvin Harris has an insanely brilliant house remix of CSS’ ‘Let’s Make Love…’, available on 12″ and iTunes along with remixes by Hot Chip and Simian Mobile Disco. Going to see him next weekend, the line-up schedules at Rock en Seine permitting.

Yea, I was glad to find it, as I remember seeing it first used in a retrospective article in the NME, oh, so many years ago…

…the things you find out on the internet…there’s a lot of stuff I’m only finding for the first time.
The Wombats are too happy… for Factory Its safe to say that Tony would never have signed them. But I’m glad someone did - its great throwaway pop.
Love Durutti Column It is classic stuff indeed.

Hey thanks for letting me know. Anything that’s insanely brilliant is worth checking out. I have to admit I listened to it using the hypemachine playerhttp://hypem.com/search/calvin%20harris%20css/1/, and managed to find the Hot chip and Simian Mobile Disco remixes too.
Still not gone on the SMD one, or with their output in general, although it might just require more spins.
But the Hot Chip one is great. It only uses the vocal track and manages to create a completely different athmosphere and not typical of Hot Chip at all. I love it. So thanks again for the tip

Ah, the stress endured when hot acts clash - its a burden
Enjoy the gig!
Camper Van Beethoven never signed to Factory. But The Adventure babies did, their song was called “Camper van”
Can you see whats happened here?
