Collins appears to take a fairly received concept of the PDs place in Irish history (although to be honest he more than most is responsible for promoting that concept) and assume that it is inherently 'true' and in that respect he is little different than most people.

I think your final point is bang on. The PD record is high on rhetoric, poor on tackling vested interests...and very very poor on achievement. Which is a pity because a serious liberal party of their ilk could have done an awful lot that even from a left position would be of value to the society.

Co-location? Dear God.

When McDowell lost his seat there was an opinion that the quality of spoken English in the Dail would plummet, especially as Bertie had delegated the responsibility of answering questions from the opposition to the then Tanaiste.

Fair enough

But the original decision to speak English preceded him by a good number of decades. It was his granddaddy, Eoin MacNeill, who brought it about when, as Minister for Education, he countermanded the executive of the Free state's decision that all Dail proceedings would be spoken in the lilting Irish tongue.

The original internet superhighway was the invention of Al Gore. The Irish version however, or internet superbypass, was yes, all the PDs work. They're also responsible for carrots, but do you think they'd get the credit for it. No chance.

Who was the bright spark in government that decided that everyone should speak English? If it was a PD minister, then they should get due credit. Also, the PD minister who invented the internet should also get fair fucks.
