Anthony, Björk and Michael
May 29th, 2007 by Donagh
I’ve been listening to the new Björk album Volta of late, and I must say I like it. One of Bjork’s musical virtues is that she always collaborates with interesting musicians. She does tend to cherry pick the hottest stars who happen to pepper the edge of the mainstream in an effort to create her own uber-alt music classic. While the formula is good, it doesn’t always work.
Fortunately, in the case of Volta, it works in spades. One of the best tracks on the latest album is Dull Flame of Desire, which is a duet with Anthony Hegarty of Anthony and the Johnsons.
Anthony is applying his unique voice to a good few musical projects at the moment. The one to which I’ve recently taken a fancy is with Current 93 composer/musician Michael Cashmore. Cashmore released his first solo album, Sleep England last year but has followed it up with an EP of extraordinary beauty, The Snow Abides.
Cashmore is one of those smoothly decorous yet experimental avant garde musicians who is capable of generating coolly sonorous music that you can be fairly sure won’t get used for a car ad or fashion make over program.
Here’s a YouTube video a fan made which uses the track The Snow Abides.
And another track from the EP

This is also available on his MySpace page.
You can buy the EP and Sleep England here.
But back to Björk. Waves and Wires have seen her recent show in California and have kindly posted up what they heard.
