GREAT IRISH BANDS, PART II: HEY PAULETTE
May 23rd, 2007 by Conor McCabe
Hey Paulette were a band I first came across through the Underground on Dame street. This was back in the late 1980s, and I spent just all my time in that bar either playing drums or getting drunk - usually both at the same time. most of the video was filmed in Temple Lane rehearsal studios and the surrounding area - although there’s a few quick shots of the then disused Point Depot. The band’s myspace also contains a link to their one and only CD album - recently released after 15 years. not re-released, mind, released. Now there’s PROPER slackers for you. Anyway, this is “I Really Do Love Penelope.”

Right, that provided me with my newly acquired fix of jangly late 80s pop for the day. But what about tomorrow. Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks for finding us !, Yes - the Underground was almost the only place we ever played. Its actually not the point depot in the video, its temple bar, near what was the Bad Ass Cafe and the back of what is now the Morrison Hotel, but it looked really different back then.
Cheers Derrick. Temple Bar has definitely changed!
[…] here, as the Sewing Room was comprised of members of two bands already covered by the series, Hey Paulette, and The Stars of Heaven - while Sean already talked about the Sewing Room in another post. Oh […]
[…] Hey Paulette Recorded in 1988, the first single by Dublin band Hey Paulette was recorded with a drum machine and so impressed John Peel that he invited them to record a session which they duly did in 1989. Peel thought the session was “peachy”. They were soon begged to do a Fanning Session. Stan Erraught of The Stars Of Heaven produced their ep “I Really Do Love Penelope on 12″ and enjoyed it so much that he joined the band. They split in 1991, Derrick went on to play bass with The Mexican Pets, Eamonn, Colm and Stan formed The Sewing Room. Derrick I just read died recently, was in a band called crumb with Eamonn and they have a great bio of how it was back in the day. Must try and track down the 2006 release Long Ball Into Nowhere on Firestation Records. Watch them in action here. […]
