Debatable Outcomes
May 17th, 2007 by Donagh
Yesterday’s debate between the leaders of the smaller parties on Primetime was hard to call. Clearly, there was no over all winner. The format itself seemed to act against it.
We, the electorate are supposed to consider a party worthy of our vote based on an undergraduate style tuss up, where each speaker was determined to shout down the other, not to clarify a matter, or win over the undecided, but to satisfy the prejudices of the party faithful, and to do so using the weirdest insults they could think of.
Who was most commanding and articulate? God knows, and when it comes to election day the only thing any one will remember, if they remember anything of this debate, are those weird insults.
“Here I am with the Left, the Hard Left and the Left Over.”
“Sponsers of Farc narco-terrorists” or something like that
“Menopausal Paris Hilton”
The last is going to be the most memorable because its the weirdest. Rabbitte seemed to be doing well till this point. It did him a disservice.
Tonight is round two. The battle between Bertie and Enda. No doubt we will hear the sound of pre-scripted sound bites clashing in the electric air. Once again we will be forced to judge who made the better stab at it.
Both politician’s grasp of rhetoric is worthy of sustained mockery.
But why should we have to judge? Surely that should be left to the rich - and acerbic - folks in the Dragon’s Den and Simon Cowell.
Both of these are the work of Ragaman.
