Von Sudenfed
May 11th, 2007 by Donagh
Mark E.Smith has said before that ‘if it’s me and your Granny on bongo’s, then it’s the Fall’. It was stated to reassure journalists that although he’d sacked his entire band and recruited a bunch of teenagers in Glasgow to take their place that the Fall would remain the same. It proved to be true, as several lineup changes later and about five albums, the Fall sound is pretty much the same.
However, if Mark’s theory is hold true what about his collaborations? Generally they sound like whoever he’s collaborating with, with his acerbic banter chucked on top. The latest one of these is a surprise, to me at least.
Von Sudenfed is Mark E. Smith providing vocals over the musical sytlings of Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars.
I love The Fall and I love Mouse on Mars. But together?
Sometimes Smith can sound like a grumbling old man with his teeth out, while Mouse on Mars can sound like the more accessible side of the Aphex Twin, mixing as they do some wonderfully sweet orchestrated tunes with clacking and grinding electronica.
The new album called Tromatic Reflexxions (Domino) is out on the 14th of May and is the second collaboration of what have been called a supergroup. The first was called That Sound Wipe (Sonig) and can be heard on the bands MySpace Page.
Von Sudenfed feature on the cover of the latest issue of The Wire and play at the Garden Party on the 9th of June.

The Fall - This Perfect Day (Peel Session)
I hadn’t caught news of that before. I used to love Mouse on Mars. And still love the Fall. Which reminds me, anyone got a copy of the Infotainment Scan? Mine was robbed out of my house about ten years ago and I’ve missed it sorely since. I was particularly taken by the techno stylings on it…
Infotainment scan is indeed one of their best. I’ll burn you a copy and send it on.
