Christmas Books
Nov 29th, 2006 by Donagh
Over on Irish Election Adam Maguire asked people to recommend their favourite political books. I noticed, after going through my books for the LibraryThing that I’ve gathered more fiction than non-fiction over the years. Curiously though, I’ve only read two novels this year (perhaps unconsciously redressing this). I’ve added the couple of political books that I enjoyed recently to Adam’s post and a few others have as well.
But seeing as it’s the time of year when many of the papers do their Christmas books end-of-year round up I thought that maybe Adam’s idea could be expanded. Sinead Gleeson touched on the topic about bloggers as reviewers, arguing that some of the finest quality writing about books that she’s come across has been on the web, specifically blogs.
Having looked around the LibraryThing catalogues of other Irish bloggers I pleasantly surprised how well-read everyone is (in some cases very, very well-read). Considering how articulate so many Irish bloggers are, it obviously follows that they’d be excellent book reviewers.
So, I’ve an idea. How about bloggers posting their best reads of the year in a similar end-of-year-round up? Maybe it’s just that I’m curious about what Hugh Green, WorldbyStorm, Smiffy, Sinead and Copernicus would recommend. Maybe bloggers are going to do their end-of-year recommendations off their own bat.
Anyway, I’m kind of looking for ideas. Perhaps people could write their pithy paragraphs about each book (perhaps just the top three) in their own blog and then attaching a specific tag to it, such as xmasbooksforirishbloggers. This has the advantage of allowing people to read all the relevant posts through technorati.
Having somewhere like Irish Election is good, but I didn’t want to limit the topics to politics.
If you think this is a good idea, or if you hate it, let me know. Put a comment up or email me at dublinopinionATgmail.com
I’ll do it.
Thanks Hugh. I’m going to follow this up with others to get it rolling.
God I’m sorry for not replying sooner. I feel bad because a lot of what I read this year was old stuff/classics etc and being honest, a lot of stuff I read from this year wouldn’t make it on to a ‘best of’ list but I’ll do my best to write one.
